Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki, who made a lasting impact across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, has died at the age of 94.
The veteran actor passed away in Chennai on Friday following age-related health complications.
The death was confirmed by actor Nassar, president of the South Indian Artistes’ Association, popularly known as Nadigar Sangam.
In a statement confirming her death, Nassar said:
“Legendary star Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away. Her mortal remains will be placed at Cenotaph Road, Teynampet, from 5 pm.”

News of the veteran actress’ death prompted an outpouring of tributes from actors and other members of the South Indian entertainment industry.
Several celebrities took to social media to remember Janaki and celebrate her contributions to Indian cinema.
Among those who paid tribute was popular Telugu actor Jr NTR, who expressed sadness over the actress’ passing.
He wrote on X:
“The news of the passing of Shaukaru Janaki Garu, who left her unique mark in Telugu and Indian cinema, has caused immense sorrow. Janaki Garu’s cinematic journey and the characters she portrayed will forever remain in our memories. Praying for peace to her soul… My deepest condolences to the family members.”
Other prominent figures from the South Indian film industry also shared messages honouring the late actress and reflecting on her long and influential career.
