The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday across Nigeria to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, which marks the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
The declaration was formalised in an official document electronically signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Tunji-Ojo sends message to Nigerians
In his message, the minister extended greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and those living abroad while also encouraging all Nigerians to reflect on the values associated with the occasion.
Tunji-Ojo said:
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.
These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The minister also urged Nigerians to use the holiday as an opportunity for prayer and reflection, stressing that maintaining peace and national unity requires contributions from citizens across religious and ethnic lines.
Minister urges peaceful celebrations
Tunji-Ojo encouraged Muslims to celebrate the occasion peacefully and with consideration for others.
He called for restraint and mutual respect throughout the festivities while wishing the Muslim community a joyful and peaceful Eid celebration.
The minister also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country.
Government offices and other institutions covered by the public holiday are expected to observe the break on Tuesday, August 25, with normal activities resuming afterward.
