Residents of Umulogho community in Imo State have been thrown into panic following the brutal killing of a female student of the College of Nursing Umuadara Umulogho identified as Wendy Achumba.
The student was reportedly discovered dead in her room on Thursday evening after neighbours became alarmed when she failed to come out or respond to repeated knocks and phone calls.
Victim Was Undergoing Further Training
Sources within the community disclosed that the deceased was from Ngwa in Abia State and had already completed her midwifery programme before enrolling for post-basic studies at the institution.
A resident who spoke anonymously said neighbours eventually forced open the door after several failed attempts to reach her.
They were said to have found her lifeless body inside the room with her head severed.
According to the source, the room remained locked with the key still inside, while the victim’s mobile phone was missing from the scene.
Residents Express Shock Over Incident
Another resident identified simply as Ike described the incident as deeply disturbing, noting that the deceased had been seen alive the previous day.
He said:
“We don’t know who did this or why she was killed. When we forced the door open, it was still locked from the inside. Someone checked and dismissed fears of rape, but her phone was missing.”
The killing has reportedly created fear within the community, while students of the nursing college were said to be in panic following the tragic development.
Speaking on her personality, a resident who pleaded anonymity said:
“She was a calm person and focused on her studies. Nobody expected something like this to happen ”
Tension Rises as Police Begin Investigation
Reports further indicated that tension escalated after angry youths confronted police officers who arrived at the scene.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, said the command had commenced investigations into the killing.
According to him:
“The Command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment.”
He added that police operatives, alongside the Divisional Police Officer, visited the scene immediately after receiving the report.
Okoye stated that the body had been evacuated to the morgue while investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
He further appealed to students and residents to remain calm, assuring them that security agencies were making efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
