The Nigeria Police Force has provided further updates on the case involving the alleged extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old singer, Mene Ogidi, by a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, in Effurun, Delta State.
In a recent video released by the Force, the Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed that the deceased had received a parcel from a friend through a driver in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
According to the police statement, after receiving the parcel, Mene Ogidi proceeded to a motor park where he attempted to send it to Sapele. He reportedly included the recipient’s details, such as name, address, and phone number, on the package.
The parcel was subsequently inspected and was said to contain a locally fabricated Beretta pistol along with four rounds of 9mm live ammunition.
Following this discovery, residents apprehended the deceased and promptly alerted the police.
ASP Nuhu Usman and his team arrived at the scene, where Mene Ogidi was handed over to them for further investigation.
However, the Force PRO stated that ASP Nuhu failed to adhere to the police rules of engagement and standard operating procedures. Instead, he allegedly shot the already restrained suspect at close range.
The remains of Mene Ogidi have since been deposited in a mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted by a certified pathologist.
ASP Nuhu Usman, along with three other members of his team, has been arrested and is currently in custody.
The Force PRO also assured the family of the deceased that justice will be served, emphasising that the Nigeria Police Force does not shield officers who violate the law.
