Veteran Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi has died after a prolonged battle with kidney failure, throwing Kumawood into mourning.
The heartbreaking news was announced by Akoma FM in Kumasi on Saturday, July 18, 2026, triggering an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans and members of Ghana’s movie industry.
Obuobi had openly battled kidney disease in recent months and was undergoing regular dialysis as he awaited a kidney transplant.
The cost of his treatment prompted support from colleagues and well-wishers determined to help him.
Actor Kwadwo Nkansah LilWin donated GH¢10,000 (about N2 million) towards his medical care, while veteran actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu contributed GH¢50,000 (around N6 million) to support the planned transplant.
Earlier, Juaben MP Francis Owusu-Akyaw had also donated GH¢20,000 (about N2.4 million).
Despite the financial assistance and support, Obuobi eventually succumbed to the illness.
His death is a major loss to Kumawood, the Akan-language film industry based in Kumasi, where he earned recognition as both an accomplished actor and filmmaker.
Throughout his career, he played a significant role in producing stories that left a lasting impact on Ghanaian cinema.
Tributes have continued to pour in following his passing, with one industry insider describing him as “a pillar” of Kumawood, while another said, “He was more than an actor; he was a storyteller who gave voice to our culture.”
