Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a painful setback in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after Guinea-Bissau secured a convincing 3-0 victory at the September 24 Stadium.
The Group L encounter, which was played on matchday two, saw the hosts take control early and maintain their advantage until the final whistle.
Guinea-Bissau Strike Early
The Wild Dogs wasted little time in making their presence felt as Franculino Dju opened the scoring after just 15 minutes.
Nigeria struggled to find a response as Guinea-Bissau defended their advantage and looked increasingly comfortable as the contest progressed.
The hosts eventually doubled their lead in the second half through Mama Baldé, leaving the Super Eagles with a difficult task of trying to get back into the game.
Any hopes of a late Nigerian comeback disappeared in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló scored Guinea-Bissau’s third goal to seal a comprehensive victory.
One of Nigeria’s Heavier Recent Defeats
The result represents a significant setback for the three-time African champions and ranks among Nigeria’s most damaging defeats in recent years.
It was also the first time in about five years that the Super Eagles had conceded three goals against an African opponent, highlighting the magnitude of the result.
Following the defeat, Guinea-Bissau moved above Nigeria in Group L and strengthened their position in the race for qualification.
CAF Explains Group L Qualification Situation
The qualifying picture is particularly challenging for Nigeria because of Tanzania’s presence in Group L.
Tanzania is one of the hosts of the 2027 AFCON tournament in East Africa and, as a co-host, already has an automatic place at the finals.
As a result, only one qualification place is available to the other teams competing in the group.
Nigeria Face Difficult Road Ahead
For Nigeria to claim the available ticket, the Super Eagles will need to finish top of Group L.
The three-goal defeat in Guinea-Bissau has therefore left Nigeria with ground to recover during the remaining matches. The Super Eagles will need to collect points consistently while also attempting to overturn the damage caused by the heavy loss.
With Guinea-Bissau now holding an early advantage in the group, Nigeria’s remaining fixtures will be crucial to their hopes of returning to the continental tournament in 2027.
