Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter, K. Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on Saturday following a heart attack. He was 73.
He is survived by his wife, actor Poornima Bhagyaraj, along with their son, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter, Saranya Bhagyaraj.

Until shortly before his passing, Bhagyaraj continued to maintain an active public presence. Just days earlier, he had attended the wedding of actor-politician Khushbu Sundar’s daughter in Goa.
Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu, he began his journey in the film industry working as an assistant to filmmaker Bharathiraja.
He later emerged as one of the most respected and influential writer-directors in Tamil cinema.
Throughout a distinguished career spanning decades, Bhagyaraj directed more than 25 films and appeared in over 75 productions.
He became widely admired for combining humour, emotion and socially grounded narratives, a storytelling style that left a lasting impact on Tamil cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.
Among his most celebrated films are Mundhanai Mudichu, Andha 7 Naatkal, Chinna Veedu, Sundara Kandam, Enga Chinna Rasa and Darling Darling Darling.
He was also instrumental in introducing actors such as Urvashi and Kalpana to the Tamil film industry.
His achievements earned widespread recognition, with former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) reportedly describing him as his cinematic heir.
Bhagyaraj also established himself in Hindi cinema through Aakhree Raasta (1986), which featured Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role alongside Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Anupam Kher.
The film went on to become a notable success, further highlighting his talent for storytelling beyond the Tamil film industry.
The Tamil film fraternity is grieving the loss of one of its most influential creative figures. Tributes and condolences have continued to pour in from colleagues across the industry as well as countless fans.
