A Nigerian doctor has taken to social media to caution the public against overlooking certain physical symptoms that demand immediate medical attention instead of self-medication or home remedies.
He shared the warning while reflecting on a recent case involving a patient who ignored serious warning signs and eventually died.
According to the doctor, the tragic outcome was linked to delayed medical intervention and poorly managed diabetes.
Doctor highlights five warning symptoms
The doctor, identified as Onuoha Cosmas, delivered the message through a post on Instagram.
He explained that the purpose of the video was to educate people about symptoms that could signal life-threatening medical conditions if they were not investigated promptly.
He emphasised that seeking medical assessment early could significantly improve outcomes whenever a serious illness was involved.
During the video, he identified five warning signs that should never be ignored and should instead lead to an immediate hospital visit.
The first symptom he discussed was the presence of blood in the stool. While many people quickly assume the cause is haemorrhoids, he warned that the symptom may also be an indication of a more serious illness, including rectal cancer.
For that reason, he advised anyone who notices blood in their faeces to undergo proper medical evaluation.
The second warning sign was a gradual yellowing of the eyes. He cautioned people against dismissing the condition as malaria or choosing to wait for it to resolve on its own.
Rather, he explained that persistent yellowing of the eyes could be a sign of liver disease and should be examined by a healthcare professional as soon as possible.
His third point focused on swelling in both legs that is noticeable upon waking and accompanied by fatigue. He pointed out that swelling affecting both legs is not the same as swelling in just one leg and should never be taken lightly.
According to him, this type of swelling may be associated with heart or kidney disease, making prompt medical evaluation essential.
The fourth symptom he mentioned was a cough that persists for several weeks or gradually becomes worse. He explained that an ongoing cough could be linked to heart or kidney conditions, respiratory infections, or cancers involving the lungs, which is why it requires assessment at a hospital.
The fifth and final warning sign was unexplained weight loss. He stated that unexpected loss of weight could be related to diabetes, cancer, malnutrition, or other underlying medical conditions.
He therefore encouraged anyone experiencing such changes to see a doctor for a thorough evaluation.
He ended the message by advising viewers not to remain at home when they notice any of these symptoms but instead to visit a hospital promptly for appropriate medical examination and treatment.
