The Kwankwasiyya Movement has pushed back against circulating reports that its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is planning to exit the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement addressing the claims, the movement described the reports as baseless, maintaining that neither Kwankwaso nor the organisation had issued any threats to withdraw from the party in response to recent candidate substitutions.
“Mere Rumours,” Says Spokesperson
Speaking on behalf of the movement, spokesperson Habibu Sale Mohammed said Kwankwaso viewed the circulating reports as nothing more than “mere rumours.”
He was firm in his position that no rift existed between the movement and the NDC leadership over the selection process.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement, and neither its leader, is complaining,” he stated.
Mohammed acknowledged that speculation about a possible split gained traction following the replacement of certain candidates who had been associated with the Kwankwasiyya bloc, but he maintained that such claims had no basis in fact.
Primaries Conducted in Line with Electoral Guidelines
The spokesperson further clarified that the NDC held its primaries on May 29 in accordance with the Electoral Act and guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He added that party stakeholders had previously reached an agreement to adopt a consensus-based approach where needed, with candidates subsequently affirmed and formally submitted to INEC without any internal dispute.
Party Unity Remains the Focus
Mohammed also confirmed that Kwankwaso had raised no grievances with the movement regarding any of the party’s decisions.
He stressed that the NDC remained committed to consolidating internal unity as political activities begin to gather pace ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
