Chioma, the elder sister of late actor Alexx Ekubo, has spoken publicly for the first time following the actor’s elaborate burial held a few days ago.
As previously reported, Alexx Ekubo died on May 11 at the age of 40 after a battle with stage 4 kidney cancer. The actor was laid to rest last week in his hometown in Abia state, with family, friends, and well-wishers gathering to pay their final respects.
In the days after the funeral, fresh claims from a family member have drawn public attention away from the tributes and toward allegations concerning events surrounding the actor’s death and burial arrangements.
On Thursday, June 25, David Ekubo, who described himself as a cousin of the deceased actor, released a statement through his Instagram page alleging that members of the Ekubo family were not adequately informed about key developments following Alexx’s passing.
According to David, several relatives remain disturbed by what they consider unresolved issues regarding the circumstances surrounding the actor’s death.
“With grave pain, heaviness and sorrow, the family of Ikenna Alex Ekubo advises the public that the events leading up to his passing have been unclear,” the statement read.
David further alleged that family members were not notified immediately after Alexx died on May 11. He claimed that despite serving as the family representative responsible for officially receiving the actor’s remains from the mortuary, he was allegedly prevented from viewing the body.
According to him, these incidents, alongside other concerns, have fueled unease among relatives seeking answers.
The statement also raised questions about aspects of the funeral arrangements. David alleged that certain members of the family did not support some of the decisions made during the burial, specifically the use of white attire during portions of the ceremony.
He maintained that relatives viewed the choice of colour as symbolic of a celebration of life, a decision they felt was inappropriate given the circumstances of the actor’s death at a relatively young age.
“The Ekubo family did not approve the wearing of white for what seemed to be a celebration of life for a 40-year-old Alex Ekubo whose life was suddenly cut short,” the statement alleged.
Additionally, the statement claimed that Alexx’s biological mother and only sibling had not been formally briefed on the exact circumstances surrounding his passing.
David described the actor’s death as “untimely” and questioned why more details had not been made available to his immediate family members.
At the time this report was filed, neither Alexx Ekubo’s management team nor his representatives had issued an official response to the allegations contained in the statement.
Amid the growing discussion, a throwback video resurfaced on social media showing Chioma sharing a joyful moment with her late brother at a family gathering. The emotional clip quickly attracted attention online.
Accompanying the video was a heartfelt message from Chioma as she mourned the loss of her brother. She wrote:
“My brother, this wasn’t the plan. How did you do this to me💔💔💔. Please come back to me😭😭😭.”
