A fresh controversy has emerged following the burial of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, as a member of his family has alleged that important questions surrounding the circumstances of his death remain unresolved.
Alexx Ekubo, who died on May 11 at the age of 40 after a battle with stage 4 kidney cancer, was buried last week in his hometown in Abia State.
While tributes and condolences have continued to pour in for the late actor, a recent statement from a relative has drawn attention to concerns allegedly held by some members of the family regarding events that occurred before and after his passing.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 25, David Ekubo, who described himself as a cousin of the deceased actor, alleged that the Ekubo family was not adequately informed about several key developments connected to Alexx’s death.
According to David, some relatives have continued to express concern over what they believe are lingering uncertainties surrounding the actor’s final moments.
“With grave pain, heaviness and sorrow, the family of Ikenna Alex Ekubo advises the public that the events leading up to his passing have been unclear,” the statement read.
David further claimed that family members were not promptly notified when Alexx died on May 11. He also alleged that despite serving as the family representative who officially collected the actor’s remains from the mortuary, he was prevented from viewing the body.
He maintained that these circumstances, alongside other developments, have deepened concerns among relatives. The statement also raised issues regarding certain aspects of the arrangements made for the actor’s funeral.
According to David, some family members objected to portions of the burial programme, particularly the use of white attire during some of the funeral events.
He stated that relatives viewed the choice of white clothing as more reflective of a celebration of life, an approach they considered inappropriate given that Alexx Ekubo died at what they regarded as a relatively young age.
“The Ekubo family did not approve the wearing of white for what seemed to be a celebration of life for a 40-year-old Alex Ekubo whose life was suddenly cut short,” the statement alleged.
The statement further asserted that neither Alexx’s biological mother nor his only sibling had been formally briefed on the circumstances surrounding his death.
Describing the actor’s passing as “untimely,” David questioned why immediate family members had allegedly not been provided with more detailed information.
As of the time this report was filed, Alexx Ekubo’s management team and representatives had not publicly responded to the claims contained in the statement.
