Irish musician and actor Glen Hansard, celebrated worldwide for his heartfelt vocals and deeply personal songwriting, has died at the age of 56 after being involved in a motorcycle accident in Dublin.
The fatal single-vehicle collision occurred in Lucan, located on the outskirts of the Irish capital, during the early hours of Wednesday.
First responders were quickly dispatched to the scene, but Hansard succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash.
The tragic news was confirmed by his management company, ATC Management, which revealed that his family was “deeply shocked and heartbroken” by the devastating loss.
A Career That Spanned Music and Cinema
Hansard’s journey into the spotlight began with his appearance in the 1991 Irish film The Commitments. He later established himself as one of Ireland’s most respected and admired musicians through his longstanding role as the lead singer of The Frames.
His career reached an international milestone in 2008 when he and Czech singer-songwriter Markéta Irglová received the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly,” the standout track from the critically acclaimed film Once.
In addition to co-writing the Oscar-winning song, Hansard starred in Once alongside Irglová, placing him among the select group of artists who have earned widespread recognition for excellence in both acting and songwriting.
Following the film’s success, the duo continued their musical partnership by forming the folk group The Swell Season, adding another acclaimed chapter to their creative collaboration.
Hansard also enjoyed a successful solo career, with his 2015 album Didn’t He Ramble receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album in 2016.
During a career that spanned more than 30 years, Hansard became renowned not only for his exceptional musical talent but also for the emotional honesty that resonated throughout his work.
Whether performing on the big screen, entertaining audiences at major festivals, or playing in intimate venues, he consistently connected with listeners through genuine passion and authenticity. He was 56 years old.
