Two prominent Nigerian apostles, Joshua Selman and Arome Osayi, have sparked an online debate after separate excerpts from their sermons began circulating on X on September 28, 2026.
The two preachers appeared to offer different perspectives on Nigeria’s spiritual identity and the role Christians should play in addressing the country’s challenges.
Arome Osayi speaks on Nigeria’s spiritual calling
In one of the viral clips, Apostle Arome Osayi of Remnant Christian Network spoke about what he described as Nigeria’s divine assignment.
Osayi argued that countries should not necessarily be judged by the same standards because, in his view, nations can have different purposes according to God’s plan.
“The next time you hear somebody showing what the Chinese are doing, they are making engines, and then showing what Nigerians are doing, we are praying — you don’t understand that nations have callings,” Osayi said.
He further stated that Nigeria’s role extends beyond what can be measured through industrial or technological achievements.
“Our calling as a nation is revival. God wants to generate something from here that he will export to the nations of the world.”
The preacher also linked some of Nigeria’s difficulties to what he described as a lack of spiritual understanding among its people.
“We are not seeing beyond the Naira, we are not seeing beyond Aso Rock, that’s why we cannot discern that these are the days that our ancestors spoke about.”
Joshua Selman speaks on church and society
A separate clip featuring Apostle Joshua Selman took a different approach to the relationship between Christianity and societal development.
The founder of Eternity Network International and the Koinonia gatherings addressed what he described as a mindset that could discourage Christians from becoming involved in business and other areas of society.
His comments were taken from his September Miracle Service held on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
“Pastors are praying for people every week to get jobs. Question: where are the jobs? And where will they come from?” he said.
Selman argued that Christians should not only pray for desired outcomes but should also recognise the need for people to build businesses and institutions capable of creating those opportunities.
“The person whose mandate and orientation is to build the business that makes that prophecy come to pass, his vision has been killed by the mentality of his pastor.”
The preacher also spoke about the wider impact of religious teaching on the continent.
“Africa is where it is today because the church has largely contributed to shaping a poisonous worldview — not to be involved in matters of society.”

While Osayi’s message placed emphasis on Nigeria’s spiritual purpose and its potential role in global revival, Selman’s comments focused on Christians participating actively in business and broader societal development.
