Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has faced heavy criticism online following her reaction to the recent school kidnapping incident in Oyo State.
The disturbing abduction, which reportedly happened weeks ago, left many Nigerians heartbroken after several schoolchildren were taken by kidnappers.
A teacher was also said to have lost his life during the attack, while videos from the scene later circulated on social media.
Reacting to the incident nearly two weeks later, Tiwa Savage said she only became aware of the tragedy after seeing singer Spyro speak about insecurity in the state.
In a video shared online, the award-winning singer explained that she tried contacting people to understand what had happened because she noticed the matter was not widely trending online.
The mother of one added that she later came across a post by media personality KieKie and realised the kidnapping had occurred almost two weeks earlier.
During the clip, Tiwa appeared emotional as she shook her head and briefly bowed it while discussing the situation.
Her comments, however, sparked backlash from several social media users. Some critics accused her of being sympathetic to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, while others questioned how such a major incident escaped her attention for weeks.
A number of online users also mocked the singer’s reaction, suggesting she was acting for the cameras. Others claimed she avoided speaking strongly about the issue because she did not want to offend people in power.
In the video, Tiwa said:
“The kidnapping that happened in Oyo State, it was just yesterday that Spyro was speaking about it, that I heard about it. I tried to reach out to some people to know the background story because it was not trending. I saw KieKie’s post, and she said it was almost two weeks ago.”
