Arsenal clinched a crucial 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday, May 8, 2026, as they continued their push to finally end their 22-year Premier League title drought this season.
The Gunners eventually found the breakthrough in the 83rd minute, when Leandro Trossard produced a decisive late finish after a fiercely contested battle with the Hammers. The Belgian forward had earlier come close twice, with both of his efforts striking the post before he finally got his reward.
This time, his attempt took a fortunate deflection off Tomas Soucek before nestling into the net, sending the Emirates crowd into celebration.
Following the win, Mikel Arteta’s side moved five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, with two games remaining. However, City still have a game in hand, keeping the title race firmly alive.
There was also late drama in the match when West Ham thought they had grabbed a dramatic equaliser through Callum Wilson. The goal was, however, disallowed for offside.

To clarify the decision, the Premier League later released a statement explaining that Wilson had committed a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the buildup before the ball was forced into the net, leading to the goal being ruled out.
The statement read:
“#WHUARS, external – 90+5’ VAR OVERTURN After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to West Ham United. Referee announcement: ‘After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is direct free kick.”
The decision quickly split opinion among fans and analysts, with some claiming there was hardly any contact, while others maintained that goalkeepers deserve stronger protection in congested penalty-box situations.
VAR officials determined that Wilson’s challenge stopped Raya from making a fair attempt to play the ball, which led to the decision being changed.
For Arsenal, the ruling could end up being crucial for the season, as the win puts them in control of the title race, with just two more victories needed to clinch their first Premier League trophy in 22 years.
