Nigerian gospel singer and televangelist Pastor Joseph Adelakun has responded publicly after a viral video surfaced online in which his daughter, Funmi Adelakun, accused him of limiting her freedom and allegedly using people to track her movements.
In a press statement posted on his Instagram page, the 77-year-old pastor rejected the allegations, describing them as “false, misleading, and defamatory.”
He also cautioned those continuing to share the viral video, revealing that his legal team had been instructed to take action against anyone still distributing the footage.
Funmi’s allegations against her father
Before Pastor Adelakun issued his response, his 37-year-old daughter, Funmi, had shared several videos containing a number of serious allegations against him.
She claimed that although she had repeatedly asked to live independently, trusted sources informed her that Pastor Adelakun had been searching for her, especially after learning the state where she was residing.
Funmi further alleged that he had deployed security personnel to look for her and had set up different means of locating her.
She also alleged that some people within his circle contacted her under the pretence of offering assistance but were actually trying to obtain information about her exact location.
“Tell this person who calls himself my father to give me my freedom,” she said in the video.
She went on to claim that security operatives had, in the past, been instructed to apprehend and return anyone who resembled her, insisting that such actions were not happening for the first time.
“Despite crying out to you that at my age, I am not a kid that you should give me my freedom. Give me my liberation. Stop making my life be around your compound, your house, and your so-called church. let me have my own life,” she added.
Pastor Adelakun’s press statement
Addressing the controversy, Pastor Adelakun refuted every allegation levelled against him, maintaining that the claims were false and amounted to an attempt to damage his reputation.
Instead of responding to each accusation individually, his statement centred on the circulation of the videos, calling on the public to ignore what he described as a harmful and misleading narrative.
He also issued a firm warning to those continuing to share the footage, urging them to “stop circulating it” while confirming that his legal representatives had already begun handling the matter.
