Nigerians could soon have the option of filling their vehicles themselves without the assistance of a petrol station attendant, following the launch of the country’s first self-service petrol station by Sunbeth Energies Limited at its Ogba outlet in Lagos.
The newly introduced system allows customers to oversee the entire fuelling process themselves. Nigerians can select their preferred fuel, complete their payment and monitor the exact quantity of petrol being dispensed into their vehicle in real time.
According to the company, the initiative is aimed at improving transparency and accountability in fuel transactions, an area that has traditionally depended on station attendants to manage the entire process on behalf of customers.
How the Self-Service Platform Works
The technology was developed in partnership with Tech Brokers Limited, a Nigerian technology firm specialising in digital transformation, the Cable reports.
The two companies explained that the platform integrates automated forecourt operations with secure payment systems. It is also designed to support multiple payment methods and different forecourt technologies, while allowing for additional upgrades and improvements in the future.
Managing Director of Sunbeth Energies, Lateef Abioye, described the launch as a significant development for Nigeria’s fuel retail sector.
Abioye said: “Today is a defining moment not only for Sunbeth Energies but also for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry. By launching Nigeria’s first self-service fuel station, we are introducing a new standard of transparency, convenience and customer empowerment. Every customer deserves to know exactly what they are paying for, and this innovation gives them that confidence.”
He said the system was developed locally, describing it as a homegrown technological solution. Abioye further explained that the Ogba outlet is just the beginning of a broader expansion plan that will see the technology introduced across the company’s retail network.
The company’s long-term plans include the development of connected filling stations that bring together digital payment systems, automated operations and data-driven insights as part of a wider effort to modernise its retail network.
