Fresh information has surfaced in the case of Mary Habila, a nurse attached to the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences (DUFUS) and deployed to the Federal Ministry of Works, after her colleague and close friend, Anita Baaki, filed a sworn affidavit before the Ebonyi State High Court.
Baaki, a physiotherapist from Benue State, stated that she was among ministry staff members who travelled from Abuja to Ebonyi State on June 24, 2026, for an official assignment under the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
She explained that the team was accommodated in staff chalets located within the minister’s country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area. According to her, the accommodation was reserved for staff and associates and was not the minister’s personal residence.
Recalling Habila’s last moments, Baaki said the nurse returned to the chalet on the evening of June 26 after getting her hair done and stopped by her room to show her the new hairstyle.
They spent some time chatting before Habila said,
“Mary told me she was tired and wanted to take a shower before sleeping. That was the last time I saw her alive.”
According to Vanguard, Baaki said she became worried the following morning after Habila failed to come out as expected. Several phone calls went unanswered, and repeated knocks on her door also received no response.
She then asked a domestic staff member to search the premises, but Habila could not be found. Other staff members were alerted, and the room was eventually forced open, where Habila was discovered unconscious on the floor near the doorway.
She was immediately taken to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed that she was dead on arrival.
Baaki stated that the affidavit was made voluntarily and without any form of intimidation or coercion, noting that it was submitted solely to support the official investigation into Habila’s death.
