Fresh political tension has emerged in Kwara State following reports that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has changed his stance on who should succeed him ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The governor was previously believed to be backing Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki for the state’s top seat, but new reports suggest he has now shifted his support to Yakubu Danladi-Salihu.
Danladi-Salihu emerges as governor’s preferred candidate
Under the new political arrangement, Speaker Danladi-Salihu, who is from Kwara North, is reportedly now the governor’s preferred aspirant to take over from him.
The Speaker is expected to battle other contenders for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress during the party’s primary election scheduled for today.
The latest development is seen as a major shift in the succession politics currently shaping the ruling party in the state.
Earlier support for Yahaya Seriki revisited
Before the reported change, Governor AbdulRazaq had allegedly endorsed Ambassador Yahaya Seriki, who hails from Kwara Central, as his preferred successor for the 2027 race.
Seriki was initially expected to contest the APC governorship ticket alongside about 15 other aspirants during the primaries earlier fixed for Thursday, May 21.
Political realignment stirs uncertainty
The reported U-turn has sparked fresh conversations among political stakeholders across the state, with many closely watching how the new alignment could affect the outcome of the APC governorship primary.
Party members and delegates are expected to gather for the exercise as aspirants continue their push to secure the party’s ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
