Residents living in several communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been informed of a temporary electricity outage after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced a planned maintenance exercise on its transmission infrastructure.
The scheduled power interruption will last for seven hours, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m., during which electricity supply will be affected in a number of areas within Abuja.
Reason for the planned outage
In a statement released in Abuja, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, said the temporary power disruption is required to allow engineers to carry out preventive maintenance on the 100 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) 132/33 Kilovolt (kV) Power Transformer (TR1) at the Katampe 132/33kV Transmission Substation.
She explained that the maintenance operation will extend to the transformer’s auxiliary equipment and related switchgear to help maintain the safe and efficient operation of the facility, as Punch reported.
Mrs Mbah added that the exercise is part of TCN’s ongoing routine maintenance programme aimed at strengthening the reliability and stability of electricity transmission throughout the nation’s capital.
Areas that will be affected
Throughout the maintenance exercise, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) will not receive bulk electricity from the Katampe Transmission Substation for distribution to customers. Consequently, power supply will be temporarily unavailable in the following locations:
1. Mpape
2. Maitama
3. Jahi
4. Life Camp
5. Kado Fish Market
6. Idu-Karmo
Surrounding communities
Residents and businesses within the affected areas have been encouraged to make the necessary preparations before the scheduled outage begins.
TCN appeals for understanding
TCN apologized for the inconvenience the temporary electricity interruption may cause residents and business owners in the affected communities.
The company emphasised that carrying out preventive maintenance is vital to preserving the long-term reliability and efficient operation of key transmission facilities.
It further assured customers that electricity supply would be restored as soon as the maintenance exercise is concluded, provided no unexpected technical challenges arise.
