The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced that its offices in Abuja and Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026.
According to the embassy, the temporary shutdown is to observe Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States.
Memorial Day Observance
The announcement was made through a statement shared on the official X account of the US Mission in Nigeria, @USinNigeria, on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
In the statement, the mission said:
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day – a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May in honor of U.S. military personnel who lost their lives in service of their country.”
Memorial Day is celebrated annually in the United States to honour military personnel who died while serving the country.
Role of the US Embassy in Nigeria
The US Embassy in Nigeria functions as the official diplomatic mission of the United States in the country.
While the embassy headquarters is located in Abuja, the Consulate General operates from Lagos and handles major visa and consular services.
The mission plays an important role in strengthening diplomatic ties between both nations through cooperation in areas such as:
