The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced that its Abuja office and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, May 1, 2026, in observance of Workers’ Day.
The announcement was made on Thursday, April 30, via its official X handle.
Federal government declares public holiday
The closure aligns with the public holiday declared by Nigeria’s Ministry of Interior, led by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to mark the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration.
The minister noted that Nigerian workers play a vital role in the country’s growth and global standing.
Suspension of services
During the holiday, key services such as visa processing and consular assistance will be temporarily unavailable at both the embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos. Normal operations are expected to resume after the holiday.
Significance of Workers’ Day
Workers’ Day, celebrated every May 1, is dedicated to recognising the contributions of workers to national development.
The day is often marked by rallies and reflections on labour rights, highlighting its importance in the national calendar.
