Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has clarified the requirements prospective citizens and foreign nationals must fulfil before they can be approved for Australian citizenship.
Among the conditions highlighted by the Australian government is a formal citizenship knowledge test, which eligible applicants are required to complete as part of the citizenship process.
Information provided on the official Home Affairs website states that applicants attending their citizenship appointment are expected to demonstrate that they understand the significance of becoming an Australian citizen.
This means showing an understanding of what citizenship involves in practical terms, rather than simply holding the status in name.
Australian citizenship: Four Requirements for foreigners
The citizenship test assesses applicants across four main areas:
1. A basic command of English,
2. An understanding of what Australian citizenship entails,
3. Knowledge of the rights and responsibilities that come with it, and
4. A genuine commitment to Australian values, which the government identifies as freedom, respect, and equality.
Applicants seeking to satisfy the knowledge requirement must achieve an overall score of at least 75% in the test. However, meeting the overall pass mark alone is not enough, as one particular section is subject to a separate requirement.
All five questions concerning Australian values must be answered correctly, regardless of the applicant’s total score in the test.
If an applicant fails to meet either of these two conditions, the knowledge requirement will not be considered fulfilled.
