Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa has voiced her displeasure over what she sees as increasing hostility toward entertainers on social media whenever the country is faced with major challenges.
Taking to her X account, the actress expressed concern about the treatment of professionals within the creative sector, noting that many are now being criticized whether they choose to speak on national matters or simply continue promoting their work during difficult periods.
She wrote: “The bullying many of you subject our colleagues to in the creative industry is crazy… They freely can’t share their opinion; they can’t post their jobs without being called insensitive.”
Amusa argued that the realities of filmmaking are often overlooked by critics online. According to her, many movie producers rely on bank loans with steep interest rates to finance projects, yet they are frequently expected to put their careers on hold and devote their platforms entirely to discussing the country’s problems.
She added: “We go to the bank to take loans to shoot movies with high interest rates, but you want us to suspend our jobs and be posting videos of kidnapping and cursing the government daily while you’re in your own office tweeting and enjoying your environment,”
The actress further stated that she has no intention of adjusting her online presence to satisfy critics. Emphasizing her independence, she said her success was not built on seeking approval from social media users and that she would not be intimidated by online attacks.
“The day I decided to start using this app actively, I’ve made up my mind that many of you trolls don’t matter. I won’t pander to mobs as I didn’t build my brand on it. I have other strings of income; don’t come under my post to act silly, I’ll send you home,” she warned.
Although she criticized the pressure placed on entertainers, Amusa also extended her sympathy and prayers to the families affected by the recent abduction in Oyo State involving schoolchildren and teachers.
“May God bring succour to the family of the kids and teachers kidnapped in Oyo state. May they return home safely,”
