It has been confirmed by President Duma Boko that former President Festus Mogae has passed away at the age of 86.
President Boko paid tribute to the deceased, acknowledging his leadership and contributions to public service, which played a major role in Botswana’s democratic and economic development.
He said: “Today Botswana mourns a distinguished statesman and patriot whose life was devoted to the service of his country.”
According to reports, Mogae had been ill for a long time and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Gaborone, although details surrounding his condition were not made public.
Festus Mogae served as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008, a period during which the country experienced significant economic growth driven largely by diamond revenues.
Moreover, it was reported by BBC News that the late former president earned widespread recognition for his decisive leadership in addressing Botswana’s HIV/AIDS crisis, which was one of the most severe globally at the time.
During his tenure, the government introduced an expanded antiretroviral treatment initiative that greatly lowered both infection and death rates.
Even after leaving office, he continued to champion access to HIV treatment, advocating for free antiretroviral medication and programmes aimed at preventing mother-to-child transmission.
In 2008, Festus Mogae was honoured with the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership for his commitment to democratic leadership and his smooth handover of power.
The recognition also reflected his dedication to maintaining stability and strengthening institutions in Botswana.
