Amusa Ayobola, widely known on Facebook as Doctor Hayor Cares, has advised Nigerians to prioritise kidney health, stressing that the organ plays a critical role in the body.
Her advice comes in the wake of the death of Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, who reportedly died on May 11 at Evercare Hospital after battling advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
The doctor pointed out that kidney cancer, especially renal cell carcinoma, may not be among the most common cancers in Nigeria, but cases are gradually increasing.
She also noted that many patients lose their lives because the illness is often discovered too late.
In a Facebook post dated May 14, Dr Amusa highlighted several symptoms people should pay attention to if they want to detect kidney cancer early.
The warning signs she mentioned include:
- Blood appearing in the urine.
- Constant pain around the side or lower back.
- Sudden and unexplained weight loss.
- Persistent tiredness or swelling in the body.
She also spoke about factors that could increase the risk of developing kidney cancer, mentioning smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, misuse of certain painkillers over a long period, and exposure to high-dose radiotherapy.
The doctor urged people not to ignore unusual symptoms, stressing that early diagnosis could make a major difference.
“Some risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, long-term misuse of certain pain medications, and high-dose radiotherapy.
“Don’t ignore the signs.
“Early detection can save your life. So, do not ignore the symptoms.”
