A Nigerian lady, identified as @cleo_peddy on TikTok, has shared a story about her 6-year-old nephew, who experienced a snake bite , and how he survived without anti-venom.
She went ahead to narrate, that her nephew’s story was similar to the case of late Ifunaya. The little boy had complained about being bitten by a snake while playing, but it wasn’t taken seriously.
After several complaints, his mum was forced to check his body. The little boy’s mum was astonished, as she saw a mark on the area he complained about.
The lady who spoke in the clip noted that she immediately instructed them to take the boy to the hospital for a proper treatment. Unfortunately, the first hospital had no anti-venom.
She revealed that her nephew was administered an anti-tetanus injection instead of anti-venom.
Upon hearing that, the lady insisted that the little boy be moved to another hospital in Gbagada, Lagos State that had anti-venom. This was done without delay, but the second hospital couldn’t administer anti-venom because of the anti-tetanus that was initially injected into the boy.
According to her, the boy was lucky to survive because the snake that bit him didn’t inject venom in the process.
She went ahead to ask:
“Did Ifunaya die from snake bite or from the result of healthcare system that didn’t have what was needed to save her life.
And I know you can also argue that she could have still died from the snake bite even if she was given an anti-venom, but that would have been a different conversation.”
Sharing the post, she wrote:
“The only reason my nephew survived is because the snake did not inject venom 🙏
Now, when I think about Ifunanya case, I can’t help but ask:
was it really the snake bite that killed her
or was it the failure of a healthcare system that didn’t have what was needed to save her life?
Yes, someone could still die even after receiving anti-venom that’s a different conversation.
But what if she had been given a fighting chance?
That’s what hurts the most.
RIP Ifunanya 🕊 🙏”
