Filmhouse Cinemas has reacted to a fatal machete attack reported outside one of its Lagos outlets in the early hours of Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The cinema company confirmed that a security incident occurred in the car park outside one of its locations but clarified that the incident was separate from its normal cinema operations.
Filmhouse also stated that it is working closely with the appropriate authorities, who have taken charge of investigations into what happened.
Cinema company honours brave individuals
In a statement published on its official social media platforms, Filmhouse acknowledged the courage of two individuals who reportedly intervened during the incident to protect people around them.
The company said:
“Both individuals stood between danger and the people in their care, and it is through their bravery that the situation was contained and safety restored,” the statement read. “Their commitment and courage in that moment will not be forgotten.”
Filmhouse did not reveal the identities of the two individuals or provide additional details about the attack, noting that the relevant authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Filmhouse strengthens security nationwide
Following the attack, the cinema chain announced that it had introduced additional security measures across its locations in Nigeria.
The company said the move was aimed at improving safety for customers, employees and everyone visiting its facilities.
“Security across all our locations has been increased and prioritised, and the safety of our guests and everyone within our premises remains of the utmost importance to us,” the company said.
Filmhouse added that it was continuing to monitor developments surrounding the incident while maintaining contact with the relevant authorities.
The company’s response comes amid concerns over the safety of public entertainment venues, with the cinema chain assuring customers that security remains a major priority across its locations.
