The Yoruba movie industry and the wider world of Yoruba literature and culture have been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor and poet Chief Alabi Ogundepo.
Ogundepo reportedly died on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the age of 84, just a day after the death of popular actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
Ogundepo’s Contribution to Yoruba Culture
The late actor was widely recognised for his contribution to Yoruba cinema and traditional oral poetry. He was also regarded as a master of Ijala, the traditional oral poetry associated with Yoruba hunters.
Born in Saki, Oyo State, Ogundepo spent decades promoting Yoruba language, culture and traditional forms of artistic expression. His work helped preserve aspects of the indigenous heritage for younger generations.
His death has therefore been described as a major loss to the Yoruba cultural and literary community.
Family Speaks on Veteran Actor’s Death
In a statement released following his death, Ogundepo’s family described him as “a remarkable literary voice whose poetry and writings reflected his deep appreciation of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history and the human experience.”
The statement was signed by his daughter, Mrs Dupe Ogundepo-Falana, on behalf of the family.
The family expressed appreciation to traditional leaders, literary communities, institutions and individuals who reached out with messages of condolence.
However, funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. The family has appealed for privacy and prayers as they mourn the respected actor, poet and cultural custodian.
Ogundepo’s passing came shortly after Ogogo was laid to rest in Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday, August 24, following his death from cancer.
