The death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has sparked fresh conversations about how serious illnesses can sometimes remain hidden despite a person appearing healthy.
Ogogo died at the age of 66 on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a battle with cancer.
His condition was only publicly disclosed shortly before his death, leaving many Nigerians wondering how such a serious illness could have progressed without obvious signs.
Aproko Doctor Speaks on Cancer and Ulcer
Reacting to the concerns, Nigerian physician and health educator Aproko Doctor took to X on Monday to explain that some serious diseases can develop quietly and initially resemble less severe health conditions.
He warned Nigerians against assuming that recurring stomach problems are automatically caused by ulcer.
“The uncomfortable truth is that looking healthy does not always mean that everything is fine inside your body. Some serious illnesses can develop quietly, with symptoms that may look like ordinary problems at first,” he wrote.
The doctor clarified that ulcers do not turn into cancer, but explained that some stomach cancers can produce symptoms similar to those associated with ulcers.
“So someone can keep treating ulcer while the actual cause of the symptoms is being missed,” he noted.
Doctor Lists Warning Signs
Aproko Doctor advised people experiencing persistent stomach pain, unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing or unusually early fullness to seek professional medical attention.
He stressed that such symptoms do not automatically mean a person has cancer, but should not be repeatedly ignored or self-treated.
“Don’t spend months or years treating a diagnosis that was never properly confirmed. If something keeps coming back, find out why,” he urged.
Ogogo was laid to rest in Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday August 24 in accordance with Islamic rites.
