A video capturing what is believed to be the last public appearance of the late Lagos State National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) organising secretary, Toba Ajiboye, widely known as Toba Ijaya, has emerged on social media.
The footage, which has been widely shared across various platforms, shows the late union leader in a lively mood during a public event, warmly greeting attendees and interacting happily with those around him.
At one point in the video, Ijaya is seen giving money to another guest, with the scenes offering no indication of the tragic events that would later unfold.
Ajiboye was reported to have died on Tuesday, July 14, after suffering gunshot injuries sustained during an attack carried out by unidentified gunmen.
Reports disclosed that the incident took place on Sunday night as he was making his way home from his childhood community in Fadeyi. The attackers allegedly intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor before opening fire on it.
Images and videos released after the attack showed his white vehicle extensively damaged by numerous bullet holes visible on the windscreen and several other sections of the car.
Early reports claimed that Ajiboye and the other occupants survived the shooting despite sustaining injuries.
Subsequent updates, however, confirmed that the NURTW official later died from the injuries he suffered.
The heartbreaking incident has thrown members of the transport union into mourning.
Reacting to the development, Lagos NURTW chairman Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, paid tribute to Ajiboye, describing him as a devoted ally whose service and loyalty to the union would always be remembered.
In a heartfelt message posted on his Facebook page, Sego lamented the loss, saying the late union official remained steadfast in his commitment to both the organisation and their political structure until the very end.
