Lagos State lawmaker Desmond Elliot has spoken about the values that guided his entry into politics, stressing that he does not believe in using public office for personal enrichment through the misuse of government funds.
The legislator, who represents Surulere Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, shared his views during an appearance on The Morayo Show, hosted by Morayo Afolabi-Brown.
During the conversation, Desmond Elliot pledged to donate N1 million to the programme. However, he remarked that he would have to find the funds through other means, maintaining that misappropriating public resources is not something he engages in.
He said: “Honestly, I can only just say, I will look for one millionaire to donate to you. I don’t know where I will get the money from because my own kind of politics, I don’t steal.”
The actor-turned-politician further explained that his position is rooted in personal values rather than religious affiliation.
“Politics has nothing to do with a Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Confucianist or whatever. It’s just what you sell. And that’s the idea”, he added.
According to Elliot, a major motivation behind his decision to venture into politics was to demonstrate that it is possible to participate in the political space without compromising one’s integrity.
“One of the reasons I came into politics in the first place is to show that you can actually be clean in politics. You don’t have to play the dirty game. You don’t.”
The Nollywood star also revealed that last year marked a decade since he entered politics, coinciding with ten years of his Christian journey.
He noted that his commitment to Jesus Christ remained intact throughout his political career and was never sacrificed because of his involvement in public service.

Here are some of the reactions from netizens to Desmond Elliott’s claims:
@TheTakesRegion: “A politician going on TV to deny allegations by promising a donation he admits he can’t fund yet. In any other country this would end a career. In Nigerian politics it becomes a viral moment. We’ve normalized the circus so completely we can’t even see it anymore.”
@IamMOOnabanjo: “It is not his fault. Naa people wey bring amm into the politics I will blame”
@Pdwildtruth: “In politics, trust is earned through actions and transparency. People will always question statements that don’t match their perceptions.”
@Beautifugift: ““I don’t steal.” isn’t the bar. What did you deliver? 12 years in Surulere, and even your own constituents are asking what changed. Honesty isn’t the same as effectiveness.”
