Security agencies are reportedly making significant progress in efforts to rescue dozens of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State, fueling optimism that those being held captive may soon return safely to their families.
According to multiple security sources quoted by Vanguard, rescue operations have reached an advanced stage, with troops and other operatives tightening surveillance and control around a forest enclave believed to be where the victims are being kept.
The abduction occurred on May 15 when armed terrorists stormed three schools located in communities within Oriire Local Government Area and carted away 46 individuals.
Sources with knowledge of the operation revealed that security personnel have effectively blocked escape routes around the National Park area, where the hostages are suspected to be held.
This strategy is said to have limited the movement of the kidnappers and significantly reduced their ability to flee with the captives.
Can Oyo kidnapping victims be freed?
Security insiders disclosed that the criminal group is facing increasing pressure as military operations intensify. Operatives have reportedly secured critical entry and exit points within and around the forest, further restricting the kidnappers’ movements and narrowing their options.
Investigators also believe the abductors recently murdered one of the kidnapped teachers in what appeared to be an effort to compel authorities to alter their rescue strategy. Despite this development, security agencies have remained committed to continuing the operation.
Information gathered from sources indicates that the kidnappers initially presented a number of demands in exchange for the victims’ freedom. These reportedly included ransom payments, the release of detained militant leaders, the supply of vehicles, and the implementation of specific religious laws.
Why have kidnappers changed demands?
Sources now suggest that several of those earlier demands have been abandoned as mounting pressure continues to bear down on the group. One source stated that the kidnappers are currently focused primarily on obtaining a ransom payment.
Security officials further alleged that the gang has links to extremist elements active in parts of northern Nigeria. The suspected leader of the group is reportedly from Oriire Local Government Area and is believed to have become radicalised after coming into contact with members of the Ansaru faction.
The affected communities are situated close to a border corridor extending toward the Niger Republic and the Kainji region, an area widely known for its challenging terrain and poor telecommunications network coverage.
What do security agencies say?
According to intelligence reports, warnings had been issued before the abductions about potential attacks on schools within the area. Those alerts reportedly led to precautionary actions, including the temporary closure of some schools.
Security agencies insist that sustained military operations targeting insurgent groups have continued to weaken several extremist networks across the country.
Expressing confidence in the ongoing counterterrorism campaign, a senior security official stated:
“The war against terrorism will be won. We will not relent in the ongoing offensive until these criminals are either eliminated or forced out of the country. President Bola Tinubu recently issued a strong warning to them. The signs of victory are already becoming evident.”
