Media personality Denrele Edun has moved Nigerians to tears after sharing the last voice note he received from late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, recorded while the actor was battling illness on his sickbed.
Alexx Ekubo was laid to rest on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at his father’s compound in Arochukwu, Abia State, following a grand wake-keep service attended by Nollywood stars including Ini Edo, IK Ogbonna, Mike Godson, Omoni Oboli, and Ayo Makun, among others.
In the now-viral audio shared on Denrele’s Instagram page, Alexx’s voice rang with characteristic warmth and selflessness, as he reached out not to speak about his own condition, but to check on his friend.
Despite fighting personal health battles, he reassured Denrele of his love and admiration, describing him as a light and an energy giver, and offering to be there for him in any way possible.
He closed the message with words of prayer and affection, declaring:
“I love you my brother and I appreciate you deeply, deeply loved. God bless you.”
A visibly emotional Denrele described the voice note as the part he is struggling most to come to terms with, writing:
“Because while he was carrying battles I knew nothing about, he still found the strength to reach out and comfort me. That’s who ALEXX was.”
He recalled their first encounter in 2010 at the Mr Nigeria pageant, describing Alexx as ambitious and unforgettable from the very beginning.
He also reminisced about a recent film project in Port Harcourt, where Alexx, despite being visibly frail, kept the atmosphere light with jokes and acts of kindness.
Reflecting on what death truly takes away, Denrele wrote:
“To the world, I was Denrele. To him, I was ‘Rele.’ On phone calls, I was always ‘NNE!’ And those silly nicknames, those private jokes… That’s what death steals. Not just the person. But the voice that called your name differently from everyone else.”
As he bid his friend farewell, Denrele expressed hope that Alexx had reunited in the afterlife with late singer Goldie, another mutual friend they had both lost.
He signed off with a heartfelt tribute, adding:
“P.S: It was so hard sharing this. I’ve held onto this VN since the sad announcement of his passing.”
