Nigerian artist Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has called out religious leaders in Nigeria, expressing concern over their silence amid the worsening hardship and insecurity in the country.
Taking to his Instagram handle on May 26, 2026, he voiced disappointment that churches and mosques continue with their regular sermons and services without addressing the pressing challenges currently facing Nigeria.
He said the situation has become so unbearable that he felt compelled to speak out against respected pastors and clerics, something he never imagined he would do.
Spyro further expressed deep concern over what he sees as a lack of response from religious leaders despite the growing insecurity and economic hardship affecting Nigerians.
He said: “I never ever thought that a day like this would come, that I’ll be calling out the people that I respect so much. But at this point, water don pass garri, the happenings in this country are sickening, exhausting, stressful.”
The Afrobeats sensation also noted that he has recently felt less motivated to attend church, as he does not hear sermons that directly address the nation’s ongoing problems.
He added that, in his view, any church or mosque that remains silent on these issues is failing the people they are meant to lead.
He added: “Any church that is preaching any message that is different from what is happening in this country and speaking up for the people and speaking to the government, you are wrong. Any mosque right now that is speaking anything different from what is happening in this country right now, you are wrong.”
He said he was disappointed that only a limited number of leaders within the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, such as Pastor Emmanuel Iren, had spoken out, while prominent figures like Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, Pastor Bolaji, and Pastor Jerry Eze had not made any public comment.
He also questioned Muslim leaders, wondering where the sheikhs and alfas stood on the issue.
His words:
“Earlier today I saw a video from PFN and it was I think it was Pastor Fola Davies, and the only known face I saw there was Pastor Iren. Where is Pastor Adeboye in all of this? Where is David Oyedepo in all of this? Where is Pastor Kumuyi in this? Where is Pastor Bolaji in this? Where is Jerry Eze in this? And for the Muslims, where are your sheikhs? What are they saying? Where are the alfas? What are they saying?”
He pointed out that biblical prophets were called to challenge unjust systems and lead God’s people to freedom, and he questioned why that kind of leadership seems missing in the present day.
“Even the Bible says the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence and the violence taketh it by force. Prophets were raised to go speak to the system, speak to the kings, and warn them. Is it that God doesn’t care about his people again? Is it that God is no longer speaking?”
