The Presidency has clarified the reasons behind the removal of Wale Edun as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, as well as Umar Dangiwa as Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
The explanation was provided by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who stated that the decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to improve governance efficiency and economic performance.
According to Akume:
“These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He further noted that the President acted within his constitutional powers as outlined in the 1999 Constitution.
Following the development, Taiwo Oyedele has been appointed as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, having previously served as Minister of State for Finance.
In the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been nominated as minister designate, while Dangiwa has been directed to hand over to the Minister of State pending the transition.
The Presidency also instructed that all handover processes be completed on or before April 23, 2026.
Before his removal, Edun had built a notable career in finance and public service.
He served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance between 1999 and 2007 under Tinubu, where he played a key role in fiscal reforms.
He later founded Denham Management Limited and contributed to various non-governmental initiatives.
In August 2023, he was appointed Finance Minister and also became Chairman of the African Governors’ Forum of the World Bank.
