The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actress Oby Kechere, widely known for her role as Ms Koi Koi in the popular movie Aki na Ukwa.
The sad news was confirmed by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) on Friday, May 1, 2026, via its official Instagram page.
Sharing her photo, the guild, through its National President, Uche Agbo, announced:
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere, Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter.”
According to the guild, Kechere passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, after battling a prolonged illness.
The statement further read:
“On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire DGN family, I extend my deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and all members of the Abuja Chapter in this difficult time. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace,”
Oby Kechere was a respected actress and filmmaker who featured in Nollywood productions from the early 2000s.
She gained widespread recognition for her role in Aki na Ukwa, where she portrayed the memorable character Ms Koi Koi.
Also recall that Previously, Nollywood also lost actor Solomon Akiyesi, who reportedly died on April 27 at the age of 66 after complaining of chest pain hours before his passing.
