The federal government has commenced applications for the 2026 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, creating a new opportunity for young Nigerians to acquire practical skills while receiving financial support.
The initiative, described as one of the country’s biggest ongoing skill acquisition programmes, provides free vocational training, a monthly stipend of ₦22,500, and startup assistance for beneficiaries in selected trades.
With training centres available across the country, registration is currently in progress, and a large number of applications are expected as many Nigerians continue searching for alternatives to unemployment and economic difficulties.
At a time when practical skills are becoming increasingly important in the labour market, the programme is being promoted as a pathway to entrepreneurship, self-employment, and long-term financial stability.
Benefits Participants Will Enjoy
The TVET programme is fully funded by the government and is aimed at helping Nigerians develop hands-on skills in various high-demand industries.
Successful applicants will receive:
- Free training at accredited centres nationwide
- A ₦22,500 monthly stipend during the training period
- Practical vocational and technical training
- Recognised certification after completion
- Startup kits and business support for selected beneficiaries
Depending on the course and area of specialisation, the training is expected to last between six months and one year.
What Makes the TVET Scheme Unique
According to a report by MSME Africa, many empowerment programmes in Nigeria either provide training without financial assistance or offer funding without equipping participants with practical knowledge.
The TVET initiative is considered different because it combines both training and financial support. Beneficiaries receive stipends throughout the programme, helping them cover transportation, feeding, and other daily expenses while learning.
The addition of startup kits is also expected to help participants transition from training into income generation immediately after graduation.
As a result, the initiative is being viewed as more than just a temporary empowerment scheme, but one designed to create sustainable economic opportunities.
Nigerians Eligible to Apply
The programme is targeted at different categories of Nigerians, including:
- Unemployed youths
- School leavers and non-degree holders
- Graduates seeking practical skills
- Individuals interested in vocational businesses
- Aspiring entrepreneurs ready to start small-scale enterprises
The scheme is also open to people with little or no formal education, provided they are willing to learn a trade.
Requirements for Applicants
To qualify for the programme, applicants are expected to:
- Be Nigerian citizens
- Show interest in vocational or technical skills
- Commit to completing the full training programme
- Provide valid identification documents, including NIN and BVN
- Be physically and mentally capable of practical training
Both graduates and non-graduates are eligible to submit applications.
Important Information for Interested Applicants
Although the ₦22,500 monthly allowance has attracted attention, experts have encouraged applicants to focus more on the long-term value of the vocational skills they will acquire.
Fields such as agriculture, ICT support, tailoring, welding, solar installation, and technical services are considered capable of generating sustainable income when properly utilised.
Applicants have also been advised to remain disciplined and consistent throughout the programme, as certification and access to startup kits will largely depend on successful completion of the training.
Application Portal and Deadline
The government has not yet announced an official deadline for applications, but registration is already ongoing and selections have reportedly started.
Due to the limited number of available slots and increasing demand nationwide, interested applicants are advised to apply as early as possible.
Applications can be submitted through the official TVET application portal.
