The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that it will adopt the direct primary system to determine the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The party urged its members to converge in Abuja, where the primaries will be held, to vote for their preferred candidate to represent the APC in the next general election.
In a trending video on Thursday, the APC National Secretary announced the development, revealing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Edo State businessman, Osifo Stanley, who purchased the N100 million nomination form, will both contest for the party’s presidential ticket during the primaries.
The APC opted for the direct primary approach after its earlier attempt to adopt a consensus arrangement failed to materialize and reportedly triggered crises in some states. For example, while the Ogun APC successfully agreed on a consensus governorship candidate, disagreements have continued to trail other elective positions.
One major contest is the struggle for the Ogun East senatorial ticket between Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Governor Gbenga Daniel, who currently occupies the seat.
Similarly, the party is still battling to settle on a governorship candidate in Oyo State, as the two top contenders, Senator Sharafadeen Alli and former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, both claim to enjoy the backing of President Tinubu.
