Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has finally responded to the demands by Nigerian youths, asking him to contest in the upcoming Presidential election in 2027.
The Elder Statesman assured the Nigerian youths that he has taken their demands into consideration and would therefore consult widely to determine his next political decision.
According to a report by Arise News, Jonathan made these claims on May 7th, 2026, at his office in Abuja where he took time to address the youth groups requesting for his return to the Presidential race.
Goodluck Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015. In the 2015 presidential election, he was defeated by the late Muhammadu Buhari, making him the first sitting Nigerian president to fail in a re-election bid
Addressing the press, he said:
“I thank you for showing interest in Nigeria. If you had no interest in Nigeria, you would not be here. Only patriotic citizens build their country; unpatriotic citizens destroy the nation and take the money elsewhere to enjoy their lives. “The key thing we need in Nigeria is peace, and you must continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections.”
Conclusively, Jonathan added:
“Nigeria has one of the highest rates of voter apathy I have seen globally. You have come today to ask me to run. I have heard you. The presidential race is not a computer game. I will consult widely.”
