A high-level meeting between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sparked fresh conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections, as both parties signaled a growing alliance amid mounting political pressure.
The PDP delegation, led by Seyi Makinde, described the visit as a strategic show of solidarity with the ADC leadership.
The meeting, held in Abuja, came shortly after recent protests and increasing concerns over what opposition figures termed “targeted attacks on democratic space.”
Speaking during the engagement, Makinde stressed the need for unity and vigilance within Nigeria’s political landscape.
“Your Excellency, we take care to visit the leadership of the APC. In a solidarity visit, we have seen what has been happening within the political space,” he said. He added,
“The protest today reflects the need to safeguard democratic space. Thank you very much for joining us.”
The PDP team included prominent figures such as Adolphus Wabara, Jerry Gana, and Babangida Aliyu, among others.
They were received by key ADC leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi.
In response, ADC leaders expressed appreciation for the visit and echoed concerns about threats facing opposition parties.
“We appreciate the solidarity of the PDP as we face existential threats to democracy. The weakening of major opposition parties threatens political plurality, and we must continue to engage in defence of democratic values and institutions,” they stated.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration, with analysts interpreting the meeting as a strategic step toward strengthening opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
