Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup may still be alive, according to Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission.
Speaking to journalists, Dikko said there is still optimism that the Nigeria national football team could feature in the intercontinental playoff despite FIFA recently listing DR Congo national football team as Africa’s representative.
The announcement by FIFA identifying six teams to compete for the final two World Cup slots sparked concern among Nigerian football fans. The countries named for the playoff tournament include DR Congo, Bolivia, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname. The competition is expected to take place in Mexico between March 26 and March 31.
However, Dikko clarified that the inclusion of DR Congo on the list does not necessarily mean Nigeria’s complaint has been rejected.
The Super Eagles were knocked out of the qualification race after losing to DR Congo in a dramatic penalty shootout in November 2025. Following the defeat, the Nigeria Football Federation submitted a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo used ineligible players during the match.
According to Dikko, FIFA has yet to deliver its final decision regarding the complaint. He noted that the global football body often communicates sensitive rulings privately to the concerned parties before making them public.
If FIFA eventually rules in Nigeria’s favour, the previous result could be overturned, potentially allowing the Super Eagles to replace DR Congo in the intercontinental playoff tournament.
Dikko urged Nigerians to remain patient while awaiting FIFA’s final verdict, expressing confidence that the country still has a chance to compete for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
