The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reiterated its confidence that FIFA will rule in Nigeria’s favour following its petition against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) over last November’s World Cup play-off defeat.
The Super Eagles were beaten on penalties at the Moulay Hassan Stadium, a result that appeared to end their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, weeks after the loss, the NFF confirmed it had formally lodged a complaint with FIFA, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive fixture.

While FIFA is yet to issue a ruling, the move has attracted criticism from some quarters, including former Super Eagles captain and head coach Sunday Oliseh, who questioned the wisdom of seeking qualification through administrative channels rather than on the pitch.
Despite the backlash, NFF General Secretary, Dr Sanusi Mohammed, insists the federation would not have taken the step without strong conviction.
“We have a good case,” Sanusi told Brila.net. “We don’t venture into what we know is an exercise in futility.”
He added: “As far as we are concerned, we have a good case and we are waiting for what FIFA will say as regards the complaints we have logged.”
Nigeria’s petition is understood to centre on claims that DR Congo breached FIFA eligibility regulations, particularly concerning players with dual nationality.
DR Congo have denied any wrongdoing and, for now, remain listed as Africa’s representatives in the inter-confederation play-offs.
Those play-offs are scheduled for March 26 and 31, 2026, in Mexico, and will involve DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, Suriname, New Caledonia and Bolivia, with two final World Cup slots at stake.
Should FIFA uphold Nigeria’s complaint, the Super Eagles could yet be reinstated, reopening a dramatic and late pathway to qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
