The Nigerian gospel music scene has been plunged into grief following the death of gospel singer and choir master Kolawole Okanlawon.
Okanlawon, who served as the choir master of CCC Winners Parish in Lagos State, was confirmed dead by fellow gospel singer Esther Igbekele in an Instagram post shared on Monday, October 5.
Esther Igbekele Reacts to His Sudden Death
Igbekele expressed deep sadness while announcing the death of her colleague, describing the news as more than a “rude shock”.
The gospel singer recalled that she and Okanlawon had spent time together during her most recent trip to the United Kingdom, making the news of his sudden passing particularly difficult for her to accept.
In her tribute, Igbekele reflected on the unpredictable nature of life and remembered the moments they shared while describing the impact Okanlawon’s absence would have on those who knew him.
She also noted that the Esther Igbekele Music Organisation would greatly miss the late gospel singer and that his contributions and presence would remain remembered.
Emotional Tribute to Late Gospel Singer
While mourning her colleague, Igbekele struggled to come to terms with his passing.
“I still find it difficult to believe that I am writing this about your demise.”
She also offered prayers for comfort and strength for Okanlawon’s family, friends and everyone who was close to him.
Cause of Death Remains Unknown
Although Okanlawon’s death has been publicly confirmed by his colleague, no information has been released regarding the cause of his death.
His passing has nevertheless sparked mourning among members of the gospel music community, particularly those who worked closely with him during his years of service as a singer and choir master.
