Nollywood has recorded another major achievement after Black Market set a new Guinness World Record, with actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele joining other industry figures to celebrate the milestone.
The record was established on Saturday night at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos, where more than 51,000 people gathered to watch the crime thriller.
Black Market Makes History in Lagos
The massive gathering was officially recognised as the largest audience ever assembled for a movie screening.
A Guinness World Records official was present at the Lagos event to verify the turnout and confirm the achievement.
FilmOne, which distributed the movie, also announced the feat on its social media platforms, celebrating the huge crowd that attended the screening.
The distributor wrote:
“51,000+ people. One screen. One moment that just made history. We’ve officially set a WORLD RECORD for the Largest Audience Gathering Ever for a Movie Screening.”
Inside the Star-Studded Black Market
Black Market was produced through a collaboration involving Rixel Studios, Signet Ring Studios and FilmOne Studios.
Fatimah Binta Gimsay directed the movie, while Nora Awolowo worked as its producer.
The film features several well-known Nollywood stars, including Omowunmi Dada, Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, and Uzor Arukwe.
Its storyline follows five market women who become caught up in an international smuggling operation amid fuel shortages and difficult economic conditions.
Funke Akindele Reacts to the Record
The achievement also attracted reactions from members of the Nigerian film industry, including actress Omowunmi Dada, who celebrated the development on X.
Funke Akindele joined the celebration after responding to Dada’s post about the record-breaking screening.
The actress expressed her excitement about the accomplishment and its significance for Nollywood, writing:
