Former Anambra State governor and NDC 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi has publicly endorsed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made his position known at the inauguration of the presidential campaign of the APM candidate, Seyi Makinde where he described the governor as qualified to lead Nigeria.
The former Anambra governor also used the occasion to call for political unity, inclusion and a credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Peter Obi Endorses Makinde
Speaking at the event, Obi acknowledged Makinde’s presidential ambition and declared that he possesses the necessary qualification to occupy Nigeria’s highest political office.
“You have a candidate who is contesting for president today, my dear brother Makinde,” “Is he qualified to be president? Yes,” Obi said at the event.
His remarks have generated attention as political parties and prominent figures continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
Obi Calls for Free and Fair Election
Obi said Nigeria urgently needs a new direction, particularly in view of the economic difficulties confronting citizens.
He expressed concern over the level of hardship in the country, saying:
“Our people are hungry. Our people are poor,”
He further called on political actors to work together regardless of who eventually emerges victorious through a credible election.
“Whoever wins genuinely from a free, fair, credible election, all of us wants to work together to save this country from collapse.”
According to Obi, the focus of political leaders should be on improving the lives of Nigerians rather than pursuing divisive interests.
“Let our quadruple be to feed our people, to pull our people out,” he said.
“We want the Nigeria we are entitled to. Nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody.”
Obi’s Political Journey to 2027
Obi resigned from the African Democratic Congress on Saturday, May 2, 2026, and was subsequently ratified as a presidential candidate for the 2027 election on Friday, May 29, 2026.
His decision to publicly support Makinde represents an unexpected development in the build-up to the 2027 presidential race.
With political alliances and realignments already taking shape, Obi’s remarks are likely to fuel further discussions about the emerging presidential contest and possible cooperation among opposition figures.
