The tragic death of Comrade Toba Ajiboye, widely known as Toba Ijaya, has taken a fresh twist following the emergence of a photo of a young man identified as “Oke” online.
Oke, who reportedly works as a bricklayer in the Fadeyi area of Lagos, has been accused of allegedly keeping tabs on Ajiboye’s movements before the NURTW chief was fatally attacked.
Reports claimed that Oke was allegedly paid to monitor Ajiboye’s activities and provide information about his whereabouts.
Shortly after his picture surfaced, it spread rapidly across social media, prompting fans and other netizens to react with disbelief over what they described as a shocking act of betrayal.
Ajiboye, aged 43, was attacked on Sunday, July 12, by unidentified gunmen in Fadeyi. The assailants reportedly opened fire on his vehicle, leaving it riddled with bullets before he eventually died from the injuries he sustained.
On Tuesday, hundreds of relatives, associates, colleagues, and supporters gathered to mourn the late Organising Secretary of the Lagos State National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Videos circulating online captured emotional scenes as mourners wept and gathered around his remains to pay their final respects.
The circumstances surrounding Ajiboye’s death have continued to generate concern, particularly given his reputation and influence within motor parks and political circles.
The nature of the attack appeared to many observers to have been carefully planned, with the killing seemingly intended to eliminate him while also delivering a frightening warning to others.
Alleged Betrayal
Details emerging from sources close to the deceased suggested that Ajiboye may have been betrayed by someone within his circle before the attack.
A source told Saturday Punch: “On Sunday, Toba came to see some elderly people and parked outside. The informant took pictures of the front and back of his vehicle and sent them to people waiting on the expressway.
He also sent a voice note informing them that Toba was alone with his driver and would soon come out. Toba came out and even gave him N5,000, not knowing that he was there to monitor him.”
Following the development, detectives reportedly arrested Oke alongside his wife. Another person, identified simply as Suko, was also said to have allegedly provided financial support for parts of the operation but reportedly escaped from Nigeria.
The investigation reportedly took another turn after a voice note was played to Saturday Punch. The recording appeared to contain a conversation in which an unidentified caller told another individual that Ajiboye was preparing to leave the location he had visited.
