The international music community is grieving the passing of legendary disco icon Victor Willis, the celebrated frontman and co-writer behind several of Village People’s most famous songs.
Victor Willis died on Monday, June 30, 2026, following what was described as a brief but aggressive illness. The news was confirmed through a statement posted on the group’s official social media accounts, according to The BBC.

He was 74 years old. In its announcement, the legendary disco group expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its longtime lead singer and asked the public to respect the privacy of his family as they mourn.
“We are profoundly sad to announce the death of Victor Willis, lead singer of Village People. Victor passed on Monday June 30, 2026, of a short but aggressive illness. Privacy is requested,” the statement read.
According to Sky News, the late performer was born in Texas. Willis rose to prominence as one of the defining voices of the disco movement after co-founding Village People in the late 1970s.
Throughout his career, he played a central role in writing and performing some of the group’s most celebrated international hits, including YMCA, Go West and In The Navy.
Recognisable for appearing on stage dressed as either a police officer or a naval officer, Willis helped establish Village People as one of the world’s most iconic and instantly recognisable music groups.
