Former Councillor who represented Nasarawa Ward in Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State, Godwin Vonga, has reportedly been assassinated.
According to a report published by Vanguard on Monday, June 1, Vonga, who served as the Magaji of Timshat, lost his life after being attacked on the night of Sunday, May 31.
The incident occurred as he was making his way back home after taking his children to Mabudi at the end of their school holiday. The attack reportedly took place along the Timshat–Mabudi route.
Sources within the community revealed that Vonga had travelled from Timshat to Mabudi to return his children, who had been spending their break at home. After completing the trip, he began his journey back to Timshat.
Reports indicated that unknown attackers intercepted him on the road and killed him before he could reach his destination.
Speaking on the tragedy, a community member, Nanbol Pirfa, said the incident had left residents of Timshat and surrounding areas devastated, noting that Vonga was widely admired for his leadership and service to the people.
Pirfa said: “The entire community is in shock. He was well known and respected by many people. We pray that those responsible are identified and brought to justice.”
Additionally, Langtang South Local Government Area Chairman, Nanfa Alhassan Nbin, denounced the killing, characterising it as a cruel, regrettable, and intolerable act.
In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Butko Bako Iliya, the chairman expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered his sympathies to the deceased’s family, the residents of Timshat, and the wider Langtang South community.
He assured the public that efforts would be made to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.
Nbin also cautioned criminal elements in the area to abandon unlawful activities or face legal consequences, while calling on residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
