An unnamed billionaire in Lagos State was reportedly targeted by a four-man gang led by a suspect identified as Ifeanyi, also known as Ifeko.
The group allegedly plotted to kidnap the Nigerian billionaire but met their Waterloo after engaging in a gun battle with police officers in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State.
The suspected kidnappers were neutralised by security operatives during an operation carried out at about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, near the Jakande Estate Gate in Ejigbo.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, addressed journalists on Tuesday, May 26, providing details about the operation.
The operation resulted in the seizure of an AK-47 rifle, an additional firearm, live rounds of ammunition, and vehicles reportedly connected to the suspects. Reports indicated that the exchange of gunfire continued until around 11:00 p.m., prompting residents and traders in the area to scamper for safety.
Commenting on the abduction case, the police commissioner revealed that the syndicate was known for targeting affluent business owners and often infiltrated Lagos to launch attacks on unsuspecting victims.
He explained that security operatives had received intelligence suggesting the group was plotting to kidnap a high-profile businessman.
He further stated that intelligence reports tied the gang leader, identified as “Ifeko,” to the training of Henry Asoona, the alleged head of the billionaire kidnap syndicate previously taken down at the Ladipo International Spare Parts Market in 2024.
According to CP Fatai, Ifeanyi had been living overseas but recently returned to Lagos to oversee the planned mission. The police commissioner explained that the suspects opened fire immediately after spotting operatives, resulting in a fierce exchange of gunshots.
In his words: “The operatives responded with overwhelming force, resulting in the elimination of four gang members, while one suspect fled the scene with gunshot injuries.”
The operation also left a police inspector attached to the squad injured after he was shot in the left leg. He was promptly taken to the Police College Hospital in Ikeja and is said to be responding positively to treatment.
He added: “Investigation is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and other accomplices connected to the gang.”
